171 From Darkness to Light with Melissa Bernstein

On paper, some people seem to have a perfect life – a loving spouse, healthy happy kids, a successful career, a comfortable home – and yet they struggle with crippling anxiety or depression. I’m sure some of you can relate. I know I can. My guest today has experienced this as well and has made it her mission, her purpose, to help others navigate their emotions and sensitivities in order to truly be happy and thrive. Stick around and hear Melissa Bernstein of Melissa & Doug fame talk about:

  • Why she never felt like she fit in with this world
  • Her thoughts about suicide and how she coped with existential depression
  • The impact it had on her to not fully accept who she truly was
  • How inner darkness fueled her creativity
  • How she made a shift from this dark place and turned her life around
  • Her new passion project, the entirely free ecosystem that she and her husband Doug have created, Lifelines, to support people, show them they’re not alone, and help them find meaning in their lives

About Melissa Bernstein

Melissa Bernstein, along with her husband Doug, is the Co-Founder of the toy company Melissa & Doug, which has created over 5,000 children’s products and sold billions of dollars of toys since its inception. Raised by educators, Melissa and Doug started the business in their garage in 1988, and they’ve been on a mission ever since to provide open-ended, inventive, non-technology playthings for young children. Throughout Melissa’s remarkable career, she kept secret her lifelong battle with severe depression and anxiety. She reveals her struggles in LifeLines, her first book, which she wrote to help others who are also suffering. Melissa’s book heralds the launch of LifeLines.com, an online ecosystem she and Doug are underwriting to support those seeking support, guidance, and community on their mental health journeys. Melissa lives in Connecticut with Doug and their six children.

170 You Get to Choose!

As women we’re often judged for the decisions we make related to work and family:

  • How can you work full time and have a child? That’s not fair to your baby!
  • Being a full-time mom and not working outside the home is so old-fashioned!
  • How can you place work above family and choose not have kids?

And sadly, it’s often women who are the most cruel to other women for exactly this! Well, I’m calling BS on all of that! No one has the right to tell us how we can or can’t make our lives work, how we must balance work and family. We get choose what we want, we get to create new rules, and I talk about how you can do exactly that, including:

  • Why we must unleash ourselves from those old rules
  • Why it’s important for our kids to see us live our purpose
  • Why I hired a coach before going on maternity leave
  • How I set up my family for financial success even while I took time off to have my baby
  • Why it’s important to have a plan to make things easier
  • How to rethink your time and your schedule to have what you want
  • How you can stand in your worth, and why it’s so important

About Adriane David

Adriane is a speaker, workshop facilitator and coach, teaching and guiding with an approach rooted in mindfulness. She spent more than 20 years in the corporate world, striving for achievement and balance. It wasn't until she learned and began practicing these techniques, herself, that she found both. The impact mindfulness has had on her own life inspired a passion for sharing it with others, especially those driven leaders who, while motivated, remain uncertain how to fit these theories and techniques into their already too-busy lives. 167 Stepping Off the Busy-ness Treadmill with Tammi Leader and Chelsea Leader Fuller

When you feed your own soul first, you have so much more to give to the people around you. I talk about this concept all the time; it is more important than EVER to put your own mask on first before helping others. If we learned anything from the last 16 months it's that nothing is guaranteed, and so we have to GO for the things we desire, do the damn thing, and put our own joy first.

It makes up better moms, better leaders, better teammates, better partners, better friends, and better people. And today's guests are experts at helping women pour into their own cups – and they're a delicious mother-daughter team!

Tammi Leader and Chelsea Leader Fuller are the founder and leaders of Campowerment, a transformational playground to grow… essentially, summer camp for adults! Talk about a DREAM, right?!

Today we're talking all about:

  • My favorite part of childhood – can you guess what it was?!
  • Why and how Tammi founded Campowerment and how she and her daughter Chelsea now run the programming.
  • How so many women are starved for genuine, feminine, empowering connection – and how the women at Campowerment help to create a culture of loving, intimate connection.
  • What it's like working together as a mother-daughter duo!
  • How you can create ANYTHING you want in your life!

About Tammi and Chelsea:

Before founding Campowerment, Tammi Leader spent three decades as an award-winning Television Producer at NBC’s The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, CNBC, America’s Most Wanted, 48 Hours, Extra, Warner Brothers and more. In 2013, totally burned out from being a single mom and very-full-time producer, she was mid-50s and seeking happy, so Tammi took a leap of faith and created Campowerment, in an effort to reimagine her childhood happy place, summer camp, where “grown-ups” could grow into their full potential. Only this time, it’s studded with experts, and produced for grown-ups, with a game-changing program that’s helping people get real, to connect and, ultimately, re-ignite their lives and organizational cultures.

Chelsea Leader Fuller is her daughter-turned-co-founder and the CEO of Campowerment. Chelsea’s a Brand Strategist with 10-years of in-house & agency experience, kicked off with a few years managing the social at TOMS (Shoes). Pre-Campowerment, her focus was on social impact, for brands like Google, The Nature Conservancy, VF Corporation, NBC, MSNBC. She’s been at the helm of Campowerment with her lineage since 2014.
